Turning Geek speak into street speak

Unplugged

In our efforts to expand Computer Ed Radio we are proud to introduce our new feature, Unplugged. Our goal is to give our listeners a chance to hear from industry insides about various topics. We will of course seek out insiders within the topic we wish to discuss but the future will gradual change that. Right now this is an experiment and we will want to hear back from you as to if we are on the right track. Your comments on each segment are welcome as are your ideas for new segments.  So go ahead, kick back and listen, I hope you enjoy Computer Ed Unplugged.

iNcontroLUnplugged #4: Geoff Robinson, Team Captain of Evil Geniuses discusses professional gaming

When you talk about gaming it can be hard to get some people to admit it, there is a stigma about the whole idea of an adult being a gamer. Your try to explain to someone that you get paid to play video games and lets face it people just do not even begin to understand. Geoff took the time to sit down and talk about gaming and how it is growing.

Unplugged #3: Melih Abdulhayoglu CEO and Founder of Comodo talks about anti-malware software

Lets face it the internet is like the wild west, bandits run wild and they method of crime they commit against us is malware. This used to be just through our emails or software a friend gives us but today even the ads on reputable sites can carry an infectiousness package that can make our PC experience less enjoyable or even rob of information or ruin our PC. The anti-ware program is our line of defense against these attacks, it is something we use everyday. It may not be as sexy as a big video card or great game but it is important to our enjoyment of computing as a hobby.

Unplugged #2: Mark Tekunoff from Kingston talks Computer Memory

Computer memory is something we all need and use on a daily basis, so haviung a better understanding of it is something I felt worthy of taking some time to discuss. Mark was able to make some time for us to discuss computer memory and the memory game in general since it now covers so much more than RAM.

Unplugged #1: Chris Taylor talks about Free 2 Play Gaming

The F2P model is one that is taking the computer gaming industry by storm. It seems to go against every concept of economics when it comes to making money from gaming but it continues to grow and gain a following among developers. Chris has come out in a few interview as a vocal advocate of this new sales model and so we tracked him down to get his thoughts on what the future holds for F2P.

  1. As most listeners know I love the free to play model for one reason over everything else.

Because various components of the game are offered for sale “À la carte” the consumer (players) will only buy the stuff that they like the most.

This makes for a happier player because they are only paying for what they like and it encourages the developer to develop more based on what their best sellers are. Win/Win

  2. The only time I really see any marginal differences is when the resolution is low you can start seeing some big jumps, upper resolutions not so much.

I have never seen any difference in gaming benchmarks on upper resolutions with a memory with lower CAS speeds by one.

However doing Video Editing etc etc, yes the memory can really help with lower latency and higher speeds.

  3. Hey, I’m really glad you guys decided to interview EGiNcontrol. As a fan of eSports and specifically Starcraft, it’s good to see that word is spreading through several more mainstream outlets without condescension or tongue-in-cheek cuteness. I really enjoyed the format of the show and the hosts are knowledgeable and funny. I expect I’ll be coming back here for more broadcasts in the future and you’ve certainly made a fan out of me. I could always use a little more tech talk in my life =D

  4. I enjoyed your interview of InControl, but seriously, stop talking about his girlfriend Anna like some sort of thing he has. I think it obviously made him uncomfortable. “Look at what you’re dating” … “she’s so hot that liquid nitrogen in her shoes couldn’t cool her down” … Can he somehow not focus so much on incontrol’s girlfriend?

    • Personally I am a huge fan of iNcontroL and team EG and eSports in general myself so I am sharing the same passion as you when I say: Seriously, stop overreacting. This is a radio interview that requires personality, etc. I am SURE that Ed did not go into this interview thinking to himself “I am going to make iNcontroL uncomfortable by talking about his gf” He just was commenting on it very casually in context to the whole interview and was simply telling iNcontroL she was beautiful in a respectful way. I don’t think iNcontroL hates it… in fact… I think he LIKES hearing it. She IS beautiful and when I have been told that about my wife it makes me swell up with pride, it’s how a lot of men are.

Anyways… relax, not a big deal.
